Server Hacked – Google Blacklisted Me

Well, I hate that this had happened, but my web server was hacked and I had malicious stuff on my website. Nothing I found was all that bad, but links to my website from other sites. These links were directed to specific files that the hacker placed on my website…that then linked to the site that had the actual malware/badware/etc.

So, just visiting my site wouldn’t have done anything to you. Only if you knew the specific files and names. I will let you all know if/when I do become Whitelisted again by google.

Telerik RadChart vs MSChart (Microsoft)

We had a very large project that required some pretty intense charting of data…coming from an Oil and Gas company. So, you can only imagine the amount of data we had to massage and chart in some way, shape, or form.

We used a very nice set of controls for this project in Telerik. They are by far my favorite set of proprietary controls for the .NET Framework. The project was heavily built around these controls so it was only natural to want to keep with them. One problem…98% of the charts had to be Logarithmic. If you are not familiar with this…its when a charts Y Axis is equally spaced with labels dramatically increased (1, 10, 100, 1000, so on) instead of your normal Linear charting (1, 2, 3, 4, etc).

This presented a problem because the Telerik RadChart did not represent the logarithmic minor ticks and lines properly. They didn’t increase and scale the way they were suppose to. It’s hard to explain in words, so here is a screenshot:

The image above still shows a Linear scale even though it’s actually Logarithmic. Well, I searched all over the internet to see if this was just a bug in the Telerik RadChart control or if I was just doing something wrong. Turns out, Telerik knows (recently) about this issue and it has been logged. I added a reply to that thread (in the link) asking if there was any update on the issue…and as you can read there…they said they were not going to fix this. They did offer a workaround though…and here is a screenshot:

What they said to do was just remove the Minor Grid Lines and Ticks from the chart. Well, I had already done that as a temporary fix, but if you know anything about the oil and gas industry then you know how sensitive and important the data is. So, when we are charting their data it is very important to be as precise as possible. The minor grid lines were very important. (BTW, this is just test data in the images, so don’t worry about any issues about showing the clients stuff).

I did some more digging and searching because I really didn’t want to spend too much more time and/or money on this Charting need. I was very lucky too. I came across Microsoft’s latest Charting Controls (add-on to Visual Studio 2008). What’s even better is that as of VS 2010 and .NET Framework 4 it will be already incorporated so there won’t be any installation needed. It did take me about a day to configure, get the data bound to it, make it pretty, etc…but this was the solution I ended up using. And, it turned out to be a lot better…and much more visually appealing. Here is the final:

My only other option would have been some Flash solution or Silverlight. And if you know me very well, you know that I HATE Flash and/or Silverlight. This is one time I can say Hurray for Microsoft this time.

Shaleigh’s Graduation, Memorial Day (3 day) Weekend, and more!

Whoa!!!! What a weekend! But a very fun weekend for us.

First, we had a party Friday night for Shay. She graduated on Saturday and we knew she would be going out with her friends partying so we threw her a party one day early. It was mostly Family and close friends, and a few of her other friends. We cooked a lot of food on the grill. It was a great time. Here are a few photos from Friday night:

The Girls

There were several more photos and peoples, but those will give you the gist of Friday night. The next morning we slept in just a bit. When we finally did roll out of bed we had to get ready for another graduation party at Tim’s house (Tim is Shay’s ‘boyfriend’). His mother cooked a ton of food too, so this is day two of eating way too much! Much fun though, and the start of the emotions for Marla! Here are some photos of that as well:

Shay and Tim left for graduation (last photo above) so we all said our goodbyes and left for home to change for the actual ceremony at TCU. IJ won’t bore you with all the details in writing…i’ll just post the photos of the actual graduation (limited because you know Mom/Marla took a million of these!!):

And then of course, there were several photos after it was over outside. hot as hell out there too!!!

We didn’t get home until 9:30 (maybe a little later than that) and waited for everyone to start showing back up as they fought through traffic to get back to the house. We sat outside and talked, drank some beers, and had a good time while Shay went out with her friends and I am sure partied her little butt off! That’s what I did when I graduated so I wouldn’t expect anything less.

We got up Sunday to get ready to go with Tammy (our neighbor) to her fathers birthday out on their land. Marla hasn’t loaded any of those photos yet, but when she does I will post those too…but in a nutshell, we yet again had a ton of food (chicken and ribs on the grill…and i didn’t have to cook!!!). Later that afternoon the kids got to ride horses. Marla even got on for a short ride as well. Once we got home we were so tired everyone just went to bed. phew!!!

Sunday we spent the afternoon relaxing for the most part. My Dad came over to cook Hamburgers and Hot Dogs…and let me tell ya, these have to be the best burgers I have cooked to date! I did have this photo of them. After the kids went to bed, Dad left, all weekend phone calls, etc were over…Marla and I sat outside for a couple hrs and just talked, got a little tipsy, laughed our asses off over all the events of the weekend, then finally called it quits at midnight.

Yep, it was a very long and eventful weekend. Well worth it!
