Digsby – Multi Protocol Chat Client

Digsby = IM + Email + Social Networks

Jonathan Snook gave me the heads up on this one. It totally slid under my nose and I didn’t even see it in my search for Multi-Protocol Chat Clients and Free Software List.

I may have to do some more research on these and come up with another review. Since that post back in 2006 about chat clients…things have changes, names have changes, Social Networks have popped up all over the place. So, for now I will just update my lists and then re-list the multi protocol chat clients that i would recommend to you (in no particular order)

I use Miranda at work.
I use Pidgin at home.
I am going to try out Digsby ASAP.
Another one I want to try soon is Instabird.

I never use Trillian any more.

When I am in my Mac world, Adium is of course my first choice…but I heard some good things were coming along with Fire before they decided to call it quits.

Anyway…Enjoy this update. Leave me a comment and let me know what you are using…what you like and/or dislike about it.

ok i understand that end user can decide.. but i share what i had experienced…
    i have tried DigsBy…
    even i tried the latest update today… but i tell you…it sucks…

digsBy sucks because… eats memory like hell + hangs down the PC (even the pc is 2.3GHz,1GB ram dell pc)

    i prefer pidgin and gajim…
    pidgin is the best.

    Regards,
    TechDudes.

I can’t agree or disagree since I haven’t tried Digsby yet. I am going to go home this afternoon and see what comes of it. I’ll most likely follow this up with a short review specific to Digsby.

Tell me..when you say these eat memory…what all other apps/processes are you running? I usually have two or three instances of Visual Studio open…2 instances of SQL Server Management Server open, two, three sometimes 4 browsers open…my chat client (and as stated above I use Miranda and Pidgin)…then various other application like Outlook or Thunderbird, iTunes, etc.

I never have memory problems because of a chat client.

Digsby does not eat memory or hang my PC. I love digsby, I find I like it much more than pidgin! How ever it is still a fairly new software and has a few things I would like fixed. All in all I think it is the best chat client I have ever used.

Digsby eats too much memory and performance due to python (yes the python interpreter is bundled). I will always prefer native solutions like miranda, trillian and pidgin (yes GTK dependancy is too heavy too).

I use a Mac, but I installed Digsby just to see what it’s like.

After realizing I had to install 6 other apps to install Digsby (a 7th app), I decided no app is worth the harassment.

    I installed Digsby.

    I love my Mac.
