Text Editors for Windows (PC) – Notepad++
Posted by Terry Apodaca in .NET, AJAX, Apple, CSS, Design, HTML, JavaScript, Mac OS X, PHP, Programing Languages, Python, Ruby, Technology, Thoughts, Web Development, XHTML on July 27, 2007
I am not going to turn this into a one vs the other or even a review of those that are most popular out there. I know there are tons, some full and rich with features and others that are super light and to the point (just editing text). But, when I am not at work using Visual Studio for my development, I am usually at home writing PHP, HTML/XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc…by hand.
With that, you usually want to find a nice editor that has the features you want and makes things as simple as possible to complete your task. Here’s a list of some very nice Text Editors for the PC:
Notepad++ (my editor of choice at the moment)
Intype
Crimson Editor
HTML Kit
Aptana
Notepad2
E Text Editor (they say will rival TextMate for the Mac, but I can’t justify paying for one when there are soooo many good ones out there that are FREE)
UltraEdit (again, why pay?)
The main reason I even started this article was because I was getting tired of the simple white backgrounds. Yeah, you can go in and change colors through some of the options, but it’s just not right. You can’t ever get the color scheme correct. So, I did a quick search for a nice theme for one of these editors…and since I already use Notepad++ as my primary Text Editor for my PC at home…I downloaded and installed Port of Ruby Blue theme. And let me tell you, this is one nice theme and it’s very easy on the eyes!!! I highly recommend this theme if you don’t want to spend endless hours trying to get your own theme complete.
Here are a couple I’ve used for the Mac:
Coda
TextMate
Bluefish
These two are kind of different in they are the WYSIWYG editor:
Amaya
Nvu (pronounced N-view)
And this is a nice little Suite of Products with both free Text Editor and WYSIWYG Editor: Trellian, Trellian WebPage, Trellian CodePad. They have a ton of other cool products too…go check them out!
CSS Reboot – REBOOTED!!!
Posted by Terry Apodaca in CSS, Design, Web Development, XHTML on May 1, 2006
Well, those of you that went to my site oh….about 3 months ago saw a tag stating I was rebooting this site. And I did, but not really. I’ll get into that later. What I want to post about is my high school class website…which I did reboot. So, if you click HERE you’ll be taken to the main stage showing all those that participated. If you click HERE you’ll be taken to the class website that I did reboot. I had been working on this site off and on for a few months now…but finally added some coolness to it. Check it out…
WordPress 2.0 Theme Competition
Posted by Terry Apodaca in CSS, Design, Personal, Technology, Web Development, XHTML on April 11, 2006
I’ve been upgraded from WordPress 1.5 to 2.0 since about…oh, March and so far I like it a lot. Nothing broke from my previous version (Wp 1.5) and I was able to throw in this nice new Theme that you see now. Pretty cool eh? Well, it seems like every version release spawns a new competition for version compatible themes. Hundreds of people submit their themes to a site that’s holding the competition for review and winners are chosen for different categories and usually receive a nice award/prize. The last few that I’ve followed were held by Alex King and his super cool Theme Browser. I should also mention that he’s also done the same for WordPress Styles and his Style Browser.
This year, someone else took on the competition. ArenaWP has a real nice setup and many people already submitted. If you are good at the CSS and XHTML thing with WP and would like to get in on the action, they extended the submission deadline to May 1st, 2006 12 PM PST. I’m not going to tell you much more about it or link to more pages. Just head over and read about it all yourself. I will tell you this though…they are giving away some really cool stuff…including a Apple 30GB iPod with Video Playback.
So, go! You have less than three weeks to get something submitted!!!
