Google Search - Argentina

July 28th, 2007 by Terry Apodaca

I am sure most of you that read this blog know about my Argentina post, and the subsequent Soccer Babes posts. As time went on, that post became more and more popular. So much so that people started to link to it and repost the image. I never meant for it to become that popular. I received that image in one of those chain mail forwards a while back…and thought it was worthy of a blog post.

So, as more and more attention was brought to it, you could Google the word “Argentina” and that photo would show up as one of the top results for both normal (human) search and image search. Hey, I wasn’t complaining…it was bringing traffic to my site! Then someone decided to send this to Digg and Reddit. Here’s a screenshot of the previous search results before Google took my site out of their search.

I guess enough people either complained or Google just noticed all the reports and no longer has my site associated with that search. Funny thing is, the image is still there, when searching for Argentina on the image search. What makes me mad is that it’s not MY site and image still there.

My question to Google is why? Why just my site was removed from the search and not the others? If someone from Google sees this post, leave me a comment explaining why it was removed. If it’s justified then I’ll be ok with this…but if not, I think it was an unfair thing to do to just my site and not the others that bring either the same image or similar images in the search results. So Google, why?

Text Editors for Windows (PC) - Notepad++

July 27th, 2007 by Terry Apodaca

I am not going to turn this into a one vs the other or even a review of those that are most popular out there. I know there are tons, some full and rich with features and others that are super light and to the point (just editing text). But, when I am not at work using Visual Studio for my development, I am usually at home writing PHP, HTML/XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc…by hand.

With that, you usually want to find a nice editor that has the features you want and makes things as simple as possible to complete your task. Here’s a list of some very nice Text Editors for the PC:

Notepad++ (my editor of choice at the moment)
Intype
Crimson Editor
HTML Kit
Aptana
Notepad2
E Text Editor (they say will rival TextMate for the Mac, but I can’t justify paying for one when there are soooo many good ones out there that are FREE)
UltraEdit (again, why pay?)

The main reason I even started this article was because I was getting tired of the simple white backgrounds. Yeah, you can go in and change colors through some of the options, but it’s just not right. You can’t ever get the color scheme correct. So, I did a quick search for a nice theme for one of these editors…and since I already use Notepad++ as my primary Text Editor for my PC at home…I downloaded and installed Port of Ruby Blue theme. And let me tell you, this is one nice theme and it’s very easy on the eyes!!! I highly recommend this theme if you don’t want to spend endless hours trying to get your own theme complete.

Here are a couple I’ve used for the Mac:
Coda
TextMate
Bluefish

These two are kind of different in they are the WYSIWYG editor:
Amaya
Nvu (pronounced N-view)

And this is a nice little Suite of Products with both free Text Editor and WYSIWYG Editor: Trellian, Trellian WebPage, Trellian CodePad. They have a ton of other cool products too…go check them out!

2008 Subaru Impreza WRX

July 10th, 2007 by Terry Apodaca

The Legend Reborn

Going on it’s X generation version…Subaru finally cleaned this car up to somewhat stand up against it’s competition (Lancer, IS250, etc) in quality and luxury. Not that the car was ever made for luxury, heck, it’s a RALLY car, bread from the very cars that made us all want to go out and get one of these even though they are/were ugly. They were FAST, and came off the show room floor FAST. Most didn’t have to do much if anything to beat a Mustang GT (not the new versions) off the start and for a good distance too.

I’m not here to review any version of the WRX…and I haven’t mentioned it’s beefy brother (the STi version) because well, those are in a class one step up. But rather, just give a reminder to those that bought the beautiful bug-eyes like I did…that over the years they never got prettier, just faster and more luxurious.

pre 2002: up until 2002, this is pretty much how the car looked stock. And as you’ll see there is a huge difference in this car after this version was done.
pre2002 Subaru Impreza

2002: The Year model I bought and fell in love with. Yep, the happy bug-eyed road monster (of it’s time of course). This is the first major body change, as well as an added Turbo accompanied by it’s needed Name WRX.

2003: Not much change, just some new colors. I think the main new colors were and ugly yellow and a new red color (maybe even a dark blue too, can’t remember). The 02-03 came in a nice wagon version too:

2004: This is the year there were significant changes. New Talights, New Healights, and sharper overall curves (including the hood scoop, fenders, etc.) Overall a nice look, just not my style:

2005: And again, as most car trends are in the US, not much changed here. Most body styles last at least 2 years before major changes…so I am just going to link the rear view of the car here.

2006-2007: The 2006-2007 versions were easily my least favorite of the WRX. The new face is hideous, and left a sour taste on many a message boards. Not may fans from what I read.

2008: I’m not going to link a picture here. I want you to check out the site for the new WRX for 08. My first impression was not so great, with their marketing material showing mostly a hatchback version. Not sure I am into that, or I would have purchased the Wagon version when I got mine. But, read up enough and you’ll fall right back in love with the WRX. It kind of resembles the Saab/Subaru mix from a few years ago too…which was actually nice. Enough ramble, here’s the link:

NOTE: This is mostly US info, as I know that these cars were released in many different versions in Japan a lot sooner.
